What Is ScoliBalance®? A Closer Look at Scoliosis-Specific Exercise

When a child comes home with a scoliosis diagnosis, families may wonder what they can actually do between check-ups. They may also be looking for ways to take a more active role in their child’s care. For some patients, a scoliosis-specific exercise program may be one part of their overall care plan.

Exercise Built Around Your Unique Curve

No two scoliosis curves are exactly alike. ScoliBalance®, a program developed by ScoliCare®, uses an individualized approach based on the three-dimensional shape of the spine. It is a physiotherapeutic scoliosis specific exercise program that follows SOSORT guidelines and is an evidenced based practice.

The program uses principles of mirror-image overcorrection, with exercises specific to each patient. ScoliBalance may also be used for hyperkyphosis, where the natural rounding of the upper back is increased.

Taking the Correction Into Daily Life

The work doesn’t stay on the exercise mat. Patients practise their corrective posture and learn how to incorporate these corrections into everyday activities, helping them carry what they learn during their exercise sessions into their regular daily routines.

Scoliosis-specific exercises may be used as part of the management of smaller curves or alongside bracing when both approaches are recommended. Other tools, including the ScoliRoll or Denneroll, may also be incorporated into a patient’s program to assist with stretching or discomfort when appropriate.

Guided by Trained Providers

ScoliBalance is delivered by healthcare professionals who have completed specific training and certification in the program. At Barrhaven Family Chiropractic, Dr. Kahlid Mankal and Dr. Majida Mankal have completed ScoliBalance Basic (Level 1) certification through ScoliCare. Their training included eight hours of online coursework followed by 18 hours of face-to-face training.

This additional training allows them to develop individualized ScoliBalance exercise programs based on each patient’s curve type, posture and individual goals.
