June is Scoliosis Awareness Month, and this year we’re making it personal
Every June, Scoliosis Awareness Month shines a light on one of the most common spinal conditions in the world – and this year, we’re doing things a little differently.
For 2026, our campaign isn’t just about raising awareness of scoliosis. It’s about changing who takes action. Because one of the most important things we’ve learned over years of working with patients and families is this: scoliosis is often noticed by someone else first.
A parent who spots something in a photo. A friend who notices a change in posture. A partner who asks if everything’s okay.
That moment of noticing – and doing something about it – can change everything.
This year’s theme is simple: Notice. Check. Act. And it starts with your circle.
What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine that affects around 3% of the population. It can develop at any age, but most commonly appears during adolescence, often during periods of rapid growth. In many cases, it causes no pain – which is exactly what makes it so easy to miss.
Left unidentified, scoliosis can progress. But when it’s caught early, there is so much more that can be done. There are several types of scoliosis, each with different causes and presentations – from infantile and juvenile scoliosis in younger children, through to adolescent and adult scoliosis. What they share is this: outcomes are consistently better when detection happens early.
What does checking your circle look like?
It doesn’t require any medical knowledge or equipment. It just requires paying attention. Look at the people around you – your children, your siblings, your friends – and notice:
- Are their shoulders sitting level?
- Does one shoulder blade look more prominent than the other?
- Do their hips appear even?
- Has their posture changed recently?
These aren’t diagnostic questions. They’re simply prompts to look a little closer at the people you care about. For a more detailed guide on what to look for, visit our page on how to detect scoliosis.
What to do if something catches your attention
If you notice something that doesn’t look quite right, the next step is straightforward. Our free ScoliScreen app guides you through a simple at-home screening in minutes. If it raises any concerns, a professional assessment with a scoliosis specialist will give you the clarity you need.
Not every curve requires treatment. But every concern deserves an answer – and the sooner you have one, the better.
This Scoliosis Awareness Month, be the person who notices.
It could make a bigger difference than you realise.
